Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, located at the southernmost tip of Spain, is a beautiful day trip destination. With its famous 426m high limestone Rock of Gibraltar towering over the city, which legend says to be one of the Pillars of Hercules, it’s not easy to miss when you’re close by.
The Rock is home to the Barbary Macaques monkey, and with more than 40% of Gibraltar being declared a nature reserve, it makes for a great hike to the top. From the top, you can see all across the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as over the ocean into Morocco. The bay between these points is where the Atlantic and Mediterranean oceans meet.

The Rock of Gibraltar rests in the historical city of Gibraltar, a British overseas territory. After changing hands many times over the centuries. It’s eventual ownership by Britain begun in the 1700s, after which they used it as a naval chokepoint in WWII.
It now sees just about all of the ships passing through the Mediterranean and is close enough that you can see Morocco and its own mirrored mountains, far into Africa across the strait.
Note: Being a British Territory, it’s important you look up whether you need to apply for a Visa in addition to your passport to visit
The Rock is also a national park, home to some wondrous fauna and flora – including some lovely local monkeys! It is also the main attraction on this island due to its sheer size, as well as its Spanish, British and Roman history. The Gibraltar Museum is a must-see spot along the way, documenting the tumultuous history of the small peninsula as it’s changed hands over the years.
The town is full of small sights like the Cathedral of Saint Mary the Crowned – built on the site where a Moorish Mosque was destroyed when the Catholic Monarchs regained rule around the 15th century.
On the trip to Gibraltar, you’ll also find the ruins of the Roman City Baleo Claudia, which was ruined by earthquakes and completely abandoned by the 6th century. Baleo Claudia was an important historical trade route between North Africa and Europe, and it’s one of Andalucia’s most well-preserved archaeological sites.
There you can see in person what the shape and form of an ancient Roman town was like. Right next to this is Bolonia Beach, one of the 5 most beautiful beaches in Spain, and one of the most popular beach spots along the Iberian Southern Coast.

Description of tour did not reflect actual tour. Did not get to top of Gibraltar – only the mid point at the Mosque level. No tour of the WWII tunnels but did get dropped off at St Michaels cave where the monkeys sit around and you could see the cable cars but no chance to even get on one. 7 hour tour is 5 hours driving and waiting to get through the border from Malaga!

The tour itself with Parody tours was fantastic!!! I would recommend to anyone. However, the day we book was a holiday and the firm was not operating, yet GetyourGuide allowed us to book

Very memorable and a true experience Our guide was so friendly and informative he made the trip very enjoyable. The visit to the Apes was slow and at a good pace for us all to enjoy these remarkable animals. The WW2 tunnels were really interesting and our guide was very clear in history.

Good tour guide and driver unfortunately, we were unable to finish. It was a good tour to Gibraltar with a good guide and great driver. Unfortunately, we were not able to finish our tour to Bolonia as our driver had his bag containing the car keys and his wallet stolen while walking in Gibraltar. So, the guide, driver, and my friend and I had to take a taxi. Ack to our hotel in near Cadiz.

An interesting and informative Tour Should have been 6 but only four of us could attend the tour on the day. Having booked through 'Get your guide' the tour itself was conducted by a local company 'Parody Heritage' We were not off a ship or staying somewhere up the Costa Del Sol which 'Get your guide' mainly appears to cater for, so it was a bit confusing trying to determine how long the tour would actually last. We were picked up at 10 a.m. as pre-arranged at the border In a large 20 seater, coach, which appeared a bit of overkill even for a party of six. the driver was friendly and well informed. We were taken round all the usual sites and the tour finished exactly 3 hours later with us choosing to be dropped off near Main Street. We did not get to the 'Top of the Rock' on the tour but managed to do so at a later stage by the cable car.

Did not even get the tour I booked and paid for Did not get the tour I booked and paid for. Was to receive a 2.5 hr tour and was back in an hour and 20 minutes. Called to figure out what happened and was told they will figure it out and email me back. That was 4 days ago with no correspondence whatsoever. Very disappointed as this was the part of the trip I was most looking forward too and now we are back home and won't be back to gibraltar again.
