The Caves of Drach are a series of four massive caverns found in the island of Mallorca (Known as Majorca locally). This island is a part of the Balearic Island chain close to the Spanish city of Valencia. These caverns are well known to attract adventure seekers from around the world year round.

The caves were discovered hundreds of years ago and are mentioned as early as the 14th century. The traditional Spanish name for the caves are Cuevas Del Drach, The Dragon Caves.

We’ve compiled a list of information and fun activities to take part in while visiting this gorgeous destination.

Highlights:

  • Have the opportunity to visit the well known Mallorca pearl shop
  • Learn more about this natural wonder and the island’s history
  • Explore and experience the vast Caves of Drach

Know before you book:

  • Be sure to eat beforehand as lunch is not included on the tour
  • The Caves of Drach are unfortunately not wheelchair accessible

The Drach Caves are famous for their beautiful rock formations and unique look. The cave networks contain Europe’s largest underground lake. This lake, known as the Martel Lake, has slowly formed into what it is today over thousands of years.

The four main caves that make up the Caves of Drach are known as the Black, White, Luis Salvador and French Cave.

The island of Mallorca itself is found in the warm Mediterranean Sea close to Spain’s mainland. It’s well known for its sheltered coves, ancient Moorish landmarks and unique landscape.

The tours offered for the Caves of Drach see many tourists annually. They usually last either full day or half day and approach the caves from one of the separate entrances.

Caves of Drach Tour Prices 2024

The Caves of Drach prices usually start at around €38 ($42) upwards to €44 ($49). This depends on if the tour is full day or half day and what is included within the package itself.

The prices are also affected by whether the tours are booked in the busy summer season or in the off winter season.

Saturday – Sunday: 10am – 5pm

Best Time to Go

The best time to go to the Caves of Drach if you’re travelling on a budget is during the winter and autumn months when prices are cheaper. Flights to the island of Mallorca are usually cheaper during this time as well.

Crowds are also much smaller during this period of time. However the best season to travel to Mallorca is debatable. In summer the scenery of Mallorca is beautiful and it’s the perfect time to explore the island and its rich history.

The Porto Cristo Caves

The town of Porto Cristo located on the eastern coast of Mallorca has some of the highest concentration of caves on the island itself. The Porto Cristo caves are comprised mainly of the four main Drach Caves as well as the impressive Coves Dels Hams.

This region is well known for its natural beauty. Many tourists flock to this island during the summer months to enjoy the warm Mediterranean ocean waters and the laid-back lifestyle of the town itself. There are also many hiking trails throughout the island to enjoy at your convenience.

The Caves of Drach Options

There are many different options available to tourists when it comes to tours in the Mallorca Caves of Drach. Most of the tours available are either half day or full day.

The Caves of Drach Half Day Tour From The South

The Caves of Drach half day tour from the South is a great option for those staying in Porto Cristo for their holiday. The average duration of this tour is around 4 hours long. You’ll learn lots of interesting facts and local stories about the caves from your enthusiastic local guide. Pickups from your accommodation are also included, making it a convenient trip.

The tour slowly takes you through each atrium until eventually bringing you to the main attraction, a live classical concert at Martel Lake. This is a real once-in-a-lifetime experience, with the acoustics in the caves elevating the music to something otherworldly.

Caves of Drach Full Day Tour From The North

This full day tour allows you to experience the caves to their fullest. It begins in the northern entrance to the cave networks and takes you through beautiful areas filled with stalactites and stalagmites.

The northern entrance to the caves is easily accessible from the small town of Porto Cristo. It does however provide a significant change in scenery when compared to the other entrances.

Light shows bounce off the cave walls throughout this trip, illuminating the spectacular interior of the caves. This tour is best suited for someone looking to spend more time experiencing the Drach Caves.

There are also parts of the cave where you can cross the Martel Lake by boat. This creates a truly surreal experience having to use a boat to travel across a lake underground.

What we liked: This tour allows you to experience the cave for a longer period of time.

INCLUDES:

  • Prepaid entry into the caves
  • Allows you to skip the ticket line
  • A live tour guide to lead you through the caves

EXCLUDES:

  • Lunch is not included in the trip
  • Limited wheelchair access
  • Gratuities

The caves are great and definitely worth seeing but the tour company needs to work on their schedule and staff. We made two supplemental stops before getting to the caves which only left us an hour to do the walk-through concert and boat ride at the end. Our tour guide was extremely rude and said we were making everyone late because we came out right when he said we were meeting. If we hadn't made the last stop at the Port for 20 minutes of nothing we would have had more time to enjoy the actual attraction. Definitely a detraction but the cave itself is amazing.

This was a really good trip, from start to finish. Well organised pick up in Palma with a stop off at the Pearl factory and Porto Christo. The caves are great and whilst there’s no boat trip at the moment or covid reasons, we didn’t feel as though we’d missed out. The concert at the end was excellent

Drach Caves are amazing! You must see it. The pearl factory is a wast of time. We did not stop at Portocristo (unless the Pearl Factory is in Portocristo). I would recommend this tour.

dommage que le tour en bateau ne dure que 1 min et qu'il y a trop de monde pour le prendre. On n'a donc pas le temps d'en profiter quand on est avec un guide.
