If you’re looking for something with a little bit of history drizzled in panache, you won’t have to go very far. That is if Segovia in Castille y León isn’t considered far at all. At this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’re destined to find a family vacation that encapsulates the millennial creator as well as the medieval historian within.

Hot air balloon flying over Segovia

Although it is currently used as a museum, the history of the Alcázar of Segovia is profound.
The castle was originally created as an Arab fortress, made with mostly wood that outlined the foundations left from the Roman era. It has since been transformed into a royal palace, a state prison, and used as an Artillery college.

This beautiful piece of architecture was noted to be the inspiration behind Cinderella’s castle in the Walt Disney film and has noteworthy architecture and some stunning views. It was built on a hilltop and situated where two rivers meet. These rivers flow out of the Guadarrama mountains, which are about 20km away.

Just an hour from Spain’s capital city, there’s a little bit more adventure to be had in Segovia’s Castle after your bike tour through Madrid. Read further to learn more about prices and tours.

Good day tour for travellers with a few time to knowing two cities in a day. We check in at 8.25 am and a person from the bus company accompanied to the bus stop. Departure at 9 am. We chose the option to be at our own pace and refuse to buy the guide walking tour on the bus. Congratulations to Ester and her high sense of humor. She made our trip enjoyable with histories and recommendations of the places to visit. Thanks.

The bus was supposed be air conditioned. It was an hour and a 1/2 journey with outside temperatures of 103゚ and humidity of 76%. The air conditioner did not work on the bus and the company did absolutely nothing to rectify the problem. There was another tour bus available but they made no effort to accommodate us on the other bus. They did not even arrange enough time for us to get bottled water in order to cool ourselves down. The tour was extremely rushed. The tour guide spoke very little English and did most of the tour in Spanish. To be honest, less than 10% of the tour was in English where most of us had no idea what the relevance or significance of the different sites were. The tour guide was very abrasive and unfriendly. I would avoid this tour with this company.

The aqueduct was much larger than anticipated and quite the architectural marvel. The Alcazar was spectacular to see as well. My suggestions: have separate tour guides for each language as a lot of time was spent waiting for the same description to be stated in the other language. Not enough time was then allotted to tour the Alcazar and it was a race to get back to the bus on time. Nacho did a nice job providing details of the history of Segovia.

First of all the bus left the meeting place 35 minutes late, with no explanation. It was a rainy day so that may have played into it, but no explanation was given. When we arrived in Segovia our guide (Maria) gave us 15 minutes to use facilities or get something to eat, since she was hungry and had to get something to eat. Then we were told at the end of visit we would get another 20 minutes to shop, etc. The castle was beautiful and the history very interesting. When the castle visit ended Maria, said, "now we head back to the bus" she then bolted in a fast speed walk back to the bus, leaving the people trailing behind a few blocks. It was a very long walk, up and down hills. She did not seem concerned about the ability of her clients to make this high speed walk back. My husband has back trouble and cannot walk very fast. He is not elderly, just has back problems and had a difficult time keeping up. After we finally made it to the bus, there were several people still trailing behind. Of course, we never did get our 20 minutes shopping time, nor did she mention it again or why it was cut off. There was definitely some kind of problem with this tour or the company, We were very rushed and I don't think it was worth the price we had to pay.

Cannot rate this tour as we missed it. Hotel we stayed at first booked a ride to get to the VPT office, but driver did not show up, Hotel then told a taxi driver where to take us and still could have made the tour, however the doorman spoke very little English and Cab driver did not speak English at all and dropped us at a tour bus stop, which still would have been alright, but no one there spoke English and could not direct us to the bus. Were stranded in the middle of Madrid. Thank goodness my daughter found a city map on here i-phone and we were able to walk about a mile to Julia Travel, and then to a cab back to the hotel.

I did this tour by myself and it was great! Rocio was very informative, caring and knowledgeable. Met some interesting, nice people. Avila and Segovia are a must see, beautiful and a nice get away for the day. Only issue was with the hotel pickup.
