In
Moorish times the faithful would have
visited the Almahad Mosque by way of the
Naranjos courtyard, washing their feet
and hands in the patio's fountain before
entering the mosque proper.

Above: Orange trees surround the
central fountain. A very wet
moment for me in the Plaza de
Naranjos. |
October is the
rainy season in Seville, which means one moment it is sunny, the next
minute it is raining, and then back to sunshine. As my luck would have it, the October
2003 rainy season delivered twice as much
rain as normal and had more rain time
than sun time.
I had entered
the cathedral as the clouds were just
forming. By the time I was ready to leave,
the rain was coming down fast and furious.
I still wanted to take some photographs
of the plaza, but I also needed to make a
lunch appointment (a 20 minute walk in
the rain). Did the cathedral gift shop
sell umbrellas? Sure enough they did,
only 40 euros (did I mention I tend to be
a little tight with my money?). But, I
really couldn't wait for the rain to
stop, I had to make my appointment, and I
wanted the photo above (with the fountain).
So, I made my decision and ran into the
rain. After all, I could dry off in the
restaurant, couldn't I?
