April Fair of Seville, page 3 - flamenco and sevillanas |
|
|
The fair starts on Monday at midnight by the ceremony of illuminating the forty
meters high main gate. In 2007 its motif was the tower of Giralda. This symbol
of the city was originally part of the principal mosque. Crowned by a weather
vane known as the Giraldillo, a giant bronze figure representing the Faith
Victorious, it rises to 97 meters. |

Entering the fair grounds you are accompanied by sounds of flamenco spreading
from the red, green and white striped casetas.
Looking inside the casetas, which open to the walkway, you see the front room
with chairs, tables and a wooden stage with people dancing and singing the
traditional sevillanas. These folksongs are authentically Sevillan, as is the
four-part dance that goes with them.
