April Fair of Seville, page 2 - Bulls and horses |
|
|
The fair was originally a livestock market launched in 1846 to raise Seville
from the depression caused by economic and natural hardships. The first fair of
1847 turned out to be such an economic success that it became an annual occasion
changing its character over the years. Bulls and horses are no longer traded,
but they have still an important role to play. |

Walkways of the "Real de la Feria" carry the names of famous bullfighters and
their pictures hang on the walls of the "casetas" (note, click on Casetas and a large photo will open in new window). The "Feria de Abril" shows
the most celebrated bullfighters of Spain in action every day. You can watch
these colourful figures in "La Maestranza" - the oldest bullring of Spain. Also
the streets close to this building are full of colour with decorated horses,
carriages, women and bullfighters.
