At one time the private gardens of
royalty, today the Retiro Park is open to all
without charge.

Once the site of staged naval battles to entertain royalty, Retiro Parque Lake is now looked over by the statue of Alfonse XII .
| Only a short distance from the north entrance to the park is a small lake where one can rent a rowboat. The park is a very popular place, particularly on weekends when street entertainers and venders populate the west side of the lake. |

Here one finds families lingering in the shade, taking respite from the city life.

The park's gardens provide a welcome change of pace for the visitor to Madrid. If you decide to meander in the gardens, don't let down your guard. Unsavory characters, bag snatchers, and pickpockets also find recreation in the park. |
