| One can walk down the Calle Mayor in the daytime, pass by the Plaza Villa, and hardly give it a second glance, but it was here that Madrid has been governed since its inception. |
 The Casa de Cisneros was constructed in 1537 to house a nephew of Cardinal Cisneros. Local
rule was granted to Madrid under Alphonse XI in
the 1300's. The local government's first
city hall was built on this square. |
