The Plaza Mayor sits almost in the
center of the old town of Cuenca. The
cathedral is on the east side of the
plaza. The helpful tourist office is on
the west side near the arch/south
entrance.

Above - The south entrance to
the Plaza Mayor. Shops and restaurants
dot both sides of the arches. This arched
building dates from the 1700's and is the
location of the town hall.
We got to the Plaza
Mayor just before 2:00 PM,
giving us time to tour the cathedral
before the siesta shut down other
Cuenca attractions. Temperatures were
really hot this June day. We didn't have
much appetite for a real lunch, opting
instead for some cold drinks and snacks
at a small cafe. By this time, my family
had become tired of the tapas dishes for
which I recognized the Spanish names, so
to my wife's disapproval I ordered a "surprise" tapas.
Even not knowing what she was eating, my
wife found fried cow's stomach very
distasteful.

Photo above - The Plaza Mayor is
a large section of pavement. It was a
very hot section of pavement on the day I
took the photo. |
