The Hotel Restaurant, an insider's secret revealed

How did you find out about this restaurant? I asked the British couple sitting at a nearby table. "We have a home on the Costa del Sol" he replied. Continuing on, he explained. A Spanish friend in Costa del Sol recommend this restaurant in Laguardia to them. "He knew that we would be returning to the UK by car" and told us "the restaurant was somewhat special and well worth going a little out of the way for." We soon all found out what he meant.

Photo Left- breakfast was included with our room.

If you are staying at the Mayor de Migueloa hotel , when you check in you will likely be asked about making dinner reservations in the Restaurant. While it may not be necessary to make advance dinner reservations I suspect it might be a good idea.

Often, accompanied by the inquisitive stares from other dinners I will take a few photos of our meals but this evening, not really thinking about it, I had left my camera back in the hotel room.

We arrived at the restaurant at our appointed time and were seated in a room with two other English speaking couples.

I would soon learn all of us in the room had ended up at this hotel's Restaurant due to a recommendation of an in-the-know friend or acquaintance. I was the only one of the group that had been told in advance about a colorful characteristic of the Restaurant, "...you might not get what you order".

Mayor de Migueloa's menu contains English translations of the restaurants offerings.

The menu contained a number of dishes I have never experienced. I noted the prices (fair for the type and quality of the meal) and realized, at current exchanged rates, this was going to be one of the more expensive meals during our trip. The proprietor came to take our order. I pointed to my selection and using my limited Spanish, we communicated as best we could. I am fairly certain I ordered the lamb cheeks. My wife ordered her selection and we added the house wine. Asked about having an appetizer I indicated we would pass, but I could tell, the proprietor really wanted us to get the appetizers.

The proprietor continued to try to persuade me on the appetizers. My brain finally recognized what was being said in Spanish. It was going to take a while to cook the main order, if we did not get an appetizer we were going to be sitting hungry for a while. We relented and went with the recommendation of croquettes as an appetizer. The proprietor moved on to the other USA couple. I could tell, they spoke much better Spanish than I. Never the less they seemed rather perplexed.

When the croquettes came they were delicious. The other USA couple would tell us later, that they too had somewhat been coerced into having the croquettes but had to admit the croquettes were the best they had ever had. Fighting off the impulse to shovel down the tasty croquettes we force ourselves to leisurely consume the appetizer and savor each tasty morsel.

When the main course arrived, my wife received what she thinks she ordered. Stretched across my plate was a long bone shank from an unknown animal. Was this what I ordered? On first view the shank looked to be mainly bone but I dove in and after the first bite I knew I could not complain, this was exceptional food! By the time I had cleaned the bone of meat I realized the serving size was more than sufficient.

We all ordered different desserts and waited to be served. Each person's order looked even more interesting than the last. I asked the others in the room how they liked the food. Reporting their meals to have been excellent, the husband of the USA couple added with some exasperation that the proprietor was rather insistent as to what they should order. The UK couple indicated their meal was exactly as they ordered it. All in the room reported they would recommend this restaurant to any others traveling to the area.

So what is the deal with not getting exactly what you have ordered? I do not know. Perhaps it was explained to me in Spanish as I was ordering the meal but I never understood. Perhaps it has to do with what the restaurant has in its pantry at the moment. Perhaps it has to do with selecting the best complementary food to insure the pallet is properly primed for the next serving. What I do know is that my wife and I both enjoyed our exceptional meals. The unexpected meal and the delightful, take charge proprietor, only added to the character of this fine facility.

If we are in the area again we would definitely come back to the Mayor de Migueloa restaurant
